#05 — Shit happens, fired without notice

I've got bad experience but sometimes it happens. However, after my arrest in last year, it seems no so drastically. Yes, this issue pretty short and there are some reasons besides topic in the title.

It is a weekly newsletter in which I share reflections on my journey as an indie maker.

Yes, I was fired from the project I'd been working on for about 8 years on this day. To be honest, I am tired. So many years on one project is a long time, especially at the current time when people hop from job to job, sometimes several times during the year. Some even think that it is normal for people to change jobs after three years.

If the main reason is only my low performance, that is OK. I would agree that maybe I didn’t do much during the last time. Why? I don’t want to say something bad about the company. Of course, there are good and bad things, practices, and technical debt in every company. Simply because it is difficult to fight something over which you have no control.

What was wrong was how it was done. And in this case, I have no excuses for them. One message I got before my accounts were closed was from my team lead, and it seems he also got this information at the last minute. We even couldn’t finish the call to discuss the "news". It is the wrong way. For me, it was the first time I saw how declared company values do not work.

It seems it's become normal for companies. That’s pretty sad and pushes us to remember that it’s just business, where only time and money are countable. But not people.

If you missed it, I renamed this main newsletter Ivan's Indie Journey. I decided to reformat the system, with which I would like to work on content I want to share. So, as an experiment, I decided to split the newsletter into several issues and publish an all-in-one issue as usual once a week on Sunday.

However, I have decided to publish Productivity Tips and Insights every Tuesday and Thursday. Technically, it is the different newsletters, as Substack says. You can opt out of the ones that are boring to you. All right, now you have freedom of choice. Nevertheless, I would like to hear your opinion.

🧘‍♂️  Next Week Focus

As life sometimes brings unexpected surprises, here is my turn to make a decision. So, this week, I have to check options, possibilities, and ways and decide what to do next. This is my main focus for the week.

👀  Ivan's Week Progress

Here are the updates for Week 04, 2023.

If you would like to get the full list of details, including real MRR and revenue numbers, feel free to join and subscribe to membership. Every Saturday at 12 p.m., I post updates on BMC under the special plan, “Build in Public”

I continue my journey in small steps, working at night. There aren't many significant results, but there are some.

Growth Review

I had the intention of making some parts of the product free. But I didn't like the first impression. So, I spent some time rebuilding the view of this database. I shifted topics to the top and replaced texts with images. The card view in such cases looks much better. I was going to launch it this week, but it seems I need to postpone it again a bit.

I even prepared a page where it is possible to download it, with a nice logo on the cover. I am pretty close to the launch, but I need time to finish the template itself.

I also updated my header image and bottom line on Twitter and LinkedIn, and it seems it started working better if you count conventions (I don’t yet).
